This week is such an important one. Take the time to listen to transgender people. Pick up a book by a transgender author about their stories. Anything by @jenniferfinneyboylan is a great start.

But, more than anything, it’s (past) time that we all do our part to protect transgender folx. Awareness without meaningful action is not enough.

Hey, Y'all. It's been a week. I've been working hard to process all of my feelngs and to fall back on my therapy lessons to help me stay grounded.

Beyond reaching out to check on my peeps and shoring up relationships, I've been thinking about how I want to vote with my dollars and my time going into 2025. Hopefully, my actions will inspire you to follow suit!

First of all, I'll be breaking up with Prime. I already use @thriftbooks , @bookshop_org and @barnesandnoble quite a bit, but I think it's as good as a time as any to turn away from Amazon.

Secondly, Audible is owned by Amazon, so I'll be switching to @librofm which supports independent bookstores. I'll also be saying goodbye to @goodreads and pivoting solely to @the.storygraph. I'm not a huge fan of either one, but the latter is owned by a Black woman while the former is owned by Amazon. Kinda a no-brainer.

Thirdly, and I already do this, but I'm going to continue to visit my local library, @fulcolibrary once per month (at least) along with continuing to support local indie bookstores @readitagainbooks , @acapellabooks and @foxtale_book_shoppe with purchases in-person and over the phone. I also enjoy attending their bookish events.

In addition to supporting local businesses and my library, I give $5 per month to @_everylibrary_ and @aclu_nationwide . In addition, I'm a proud member of @penamerica and also donate through my bookclubs to @americanlibraryassociation. I know not everyone can afford to do that, but even if you donate to one cause or just donate $1 per month, your money will be going to fight censorship and support libraries and librarians -- all things near and dear to our hearts in this space.

Finally, and maybe this one is the most important, y'all -- GET INVOLVED. Whether it's your local election, library, city council, or school board, being present at those meetings, taking notes, and holding members accountable is how we hold fascism at bay. Small changes at the local level over time that chip away at our access and freedom is what you should expect. Pick one.

Not going to lie, I like friendship bracelets, and I enjoy making them for others. I have done so recently to raise money to cover the cost of stamps for postcards sent to Democrat voters here in Georgia. However, this post has a point. Making and wearing bracelets alone is performative. It doesn’t actually help those who are going to need it in the months to come.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with making these bracelets to sell to put toward rising money to support BIPOC and LQBTQ+ causes, but it’s important we listen to marginalized folks and do those things they ask us to first.

Now, more than ever, we need to lean on and build up our community. Bookstagram has always been a source of strength and a place of comfort and love for me, and I want to reiterate that I stand on the side of love, compassion, and freedom, especially for those marginalized folx who are about to become even more oppressed by the incoming regime.

To my beloved community: This is a safe space. You are welcome here. We will do our best to get through this together, and you have my word that I will continue the work to stop censorship and empower literacy and the stories of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ people.

To anyone else: There will be no calls here for kindness, consideration, or unity with the oppressor. Empathy is reserved for those who are being targeted. Hate has no home here except for that which hurts others by taking away their rights. If that bothers you, unfollow me. You’re free to go, and your comments will be removed and you will be blocked if you challenge me or attempt to do or say anything that negatively impacts those of us here. The paradox of tolerance is real. Educate yourself. Confront your privilege. Listen to those who are grieving. Build empathy.

I was pleasantly surprised not only by the selection of curated stories, but also by their clever and useful app, their new-ish podcast with the author(s) for the month, and how their model helps to launch the best new and diverse authors into publishing. Recently, they have added the option to choose audiobooks instead of having books shipped.

So...I'm FINALLY getting around to posting my finished September reads, and I realized that I was so busy the last several weeks with school starting, cross country practice swinging into full gear, taking off for my book club trip, planning and hosting my @gapostcardproject postcard parties, starting @silentbookclubsandysprings, and helping @pontoonbrewing with their first ever Boozy Book Fair that I had completely forgotten to post my August reads. As it happens, I didn't read much in August. Actually, I read a lot, but I didn't finish most of what I started. I did finish Lucky Red by Claudia Cravens, and I learned that there are Western genre books out there for me.

I'm excited at this point three-quarters into the year to only be 15 books away from my Goodreads Reading Challenge. I'm reading at or well over 20 minutes per day with over half of my genres to explore under my belt and a plan to complete my second buddy read in December. I'm not journaling as much as I should, but I can continue to work on that.

I think the funniest part of these milestone posts is seeing my TBR steadily increase month over month DESPITE overshooting my goal to read more from that stack.

I’ve included a shot of one of four giant murals painted directly on the Library of Congress’s Hispanic Reading Room walls by Brazilian artist Candido Portinari. They are beyond breathtaking in person, and I highly encourage you to check them out on your next trip to Washington, D.C.

Our first postcard party was packed with over 50 attendees, and we blew past our goals of completing 1300 postcards. WE COMPLETED 2145! The enthusiasm and excitement is electric. Come be a part of it our final postcard party!

It's on like Donkey Kong! Silent Book Club Sandy Springs will meet the second Wednesday of every month from 6:30 - 8:30 PM at the Pontoon Brewing Company Tap Room.

Event is free and starts at 6:30 PM. Look for the designated space when you arrive. If you'd like grab a bite from one of the vendors, order a beer (or non-alcoholic beverage), share what you're reading with other attendees, and settle in. We'll have silent, sustained reading from 7:00-8:00 PM, and then feel free to hang around for another 30 minutes to socialize -- or not!

Calling all readers and bibliophiles! Have you ever wanted to revisit the heady olden days of Scholastic Book fairs from our childhood? Well, here’s your opportunity!

@pontoonbrewing is hosting their first Boozy Book Fair on Thursday, October 3 from 6-8 PM at their Sandy Springs tap room. @melindaslittlelibrary is co-sponsoring and will showcase the new little diverse library we just partnered with Pontoon in getting set up there.

@readitagainbooks will be on hand with a pop up bookstore and a great selection of titles to purchase. Purchase a book for Pontoon’s little diverse library or bring your own new or gently used book from home, and get a FREE 10 oz. beer!

Vendors will be on site for food purchases. Stay for trivia night!

It’s taken me a while to load this last reel from our Bookish Book Club trip to D.C., but suffice it to say that the Library of Congress National Book Festival did not disappoint. There were so many things to see and do, but my list included sessions with James McBride, Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, Casey McQuiston and Abby Jimenez, and Rebecca Yarros. I chose not to get books signed because the lines got so long in advance that you couldn’t watch the interview and wait for signatures.

If you’ve been waiting for a sign to visit this festival, this is it. Fellow club member, Traci, and I had a blast. D.C. is walkable and chock full of free places to check out. The Library of Congress should be on every reader’s bucket list.

Today we started @fordstheatre . The museum there is amazing and their “aftermath” collection was open for viewing. Anyone having read Manhunt by James L Swanson should definitely put it on your bucket list. The afternoon was spent @amhistorymuseum. Soooo much to see there including the First Ladies’ gowns collection and a fascinating exhibit on American entertainment. Finally, after a rest (and more postcard writing) and some dinner, we headed out to @oldtowntrolley tours to see our nation’s monuments by moonlight. Highly recommend!

The weather here has been PERFECT! Cool with a breeze and almost chilly in the evening.
